Takashi HATTORI
Born in Tokyo in 1970. Lived in Jerusalem from April 2019 to June 2023. Living in the Marshall Islands since June 2023.
Since 2017, I have been creating works using sand, and especially in Jerusalem, I have been producing works while praying for regional peace and stability.
As it is said, "We are born from the earth and return to the earth," the land encompasses life and death. Using sand that carries the memory of the land's history, I aim to breathe life into my works by harnessing the inherent power and beauty of the sand.
The "maze" that often appears in these sand-based works suggests civilization. It represents artificial structures like ruins and also implies various problems caused by humans themselves. These problems weather away over time, but new problems arise again. Additionally, the horizontal stripes resemble strata or ancient documents inscribed on clay tablets, implying the accumulation of history and the whisper of drums.
Through my work, I want to convey such perspectives to as many people as possible.

Key Points of Artwork Creation
My works are created using "sand" from a certain land. I feel that the material itself contains memories, history, and landscapes, and by fixing it onto the canvas, I try to visualize the invisible stories of the land.
As a technique, I use acrylic paint medium on canvas to adhere the sand, layering it while being conscious of light and shadow. Rather than "painting," it is closer to the sense of "evoking" or "excavating," cherishing the process as if touching the strata of memory.
recommendation letter
Takashi HATTORI's works contain deep prayer and tranquility as if connected to the earth.
By using natural materials such as soil and sand, they gently touch the memories and senses of the viewers, drawing out emotions that transcend time and place.
Especially, works using soil from conflict areas have a strength that resonates beyond words.
He is an artist with a quiet power that brings warmth and depth to the space.
